Uruguay welcomed Paraguay to Montevideo. I think everyone would agree that it would be best never to speak of the first half again. It ended 0-0.
In the second period, the match finally sprung to life. Seven minutes in, Uruguay really should have been granted a penalty when Edinson Cavani was held around his waist by Cristian Riveros and pulled to the ground on a corner kick play, but no foul was marked. With only a dozen minutes left, Nicolas Lodeiro nearly put Uruguay in front, but a flying save by Paraguay goalkeeper Diego Barreto denied him. He had no answer three minutes later, however, when Luis Suarez (pictured, blue) volleyed home to the far side netting after a perfect cross from Lodeiro. However, but four minutes later, Paraguay had knotted the score. A defensive header from Uruguay centerback Diego Lugano was flicked on backwards, allowing Edgar Benitez to pip a goal for Paraguay. In stoppage time, Barreto made a kick save while Suarez was able to kick the ball, preserving the 1-1 draw for Paraguay that held true through the final whistle.
