Nicosia and a nearly vacant stadium saw visiting group leaders Switzerland come into town to face off against Cyprus. A quarter hour in, the Swiss were on the move with an attack led by Haris Seferovic that led to a pass slightly behind Xherdan Shaqiri, who dragged his effort wide from the penalty spot. Eight minutes later, Shaqiri had a chance to atone for his sin, but instead he compounded it by not being able to tap home a Seferovic shot that was slowly going just wide of the far post.
In the second period, Cyprus showed more offensive potential. Dimitris Christofi unleashed a powerful shot from outside that area that required a diving save from Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Switzerland nearly pipped a winner through a Valentin Stocker effort on a rapidly closing open net situation, but his effort rolled mere inches away from glory. Cyprus were able to close the door on the Swiss offense and the match ends in a 0-0 draw, a frustrating result for Switzerland.
