United States of America 1 - Costa Rica 0

Commerce City was facing blizzard conditions as the hosts United States of America were facing Costa Rica.  Nevertheless, the match was able to take place thanks to constantly shoveling of the lines by the groundscrew.  A Jozy Altidore (picture, white #17) shot with no chance of beating the goalkeeper took a wicked deflection off a Costa Rica defender and fell right in the path of an unmarked Clinte Dempsey (pictured, white #8) for a tap in goal.  The United States led 1-0 after the fortuitous bounce.  Costa Rica surprisingly looked more dangerous after the goal, but the Americans led 1-0 at the break.

A Costa Rica defender make a nice sliding block to prevent a second goal.  American centerback Omar Gonzalez matched him minutes later with a sliding block of his own.  Ten minutes into the second half, referee Joel Aguilar stopped play in order to converse with the two sides and get their opinions of whether to continue.  Costa Rica, who had been in the ascendancy, seemed to push harder for play to continue through the driving snow, and Aguilar decided to continue with the affair.  The remainder of the match was incredibly sloppy due to the terrible conditions, and thankfully no player suffered an injury due to the snow.  Costa Rica lodged a protest after the match, but there is no foreseeable way it will do anything to chance the final result.  United States win 1-0 in the snow.
