Uruguay 4 - Chile 0

The crowd at Montevideo welcomed Chile as they took on their beloved Uruguay. Lost amongst all the talk about the absence of his strike partner Diego Forlan was Luis Suarez (pictured, blue). The Liverpool (England) player was at his very best as he tormented the Chilean defense, especially goalkeeper Claudio Bravo (pictured, yellow) and centerback Waldo Ponce (pictured, red). The first Suarez goal came four minutes before halftime after Suarez had barely missed a goal due to an offsides call. The second goal came three minutes later and was a perfect demonstration of how the night went for Suarez, Bravo, and Ponce. Bravo came off his line only to weakly bat a ball away at the 18-yard line. Edinson Cavani flicked the ball on goal, where it was headed up off the line by a Chilean defender. The resulting loose ball ended up as a fight for a header between Suarez and the much taller Ponce, but the garra charrua within Suarez allowed him to outjump Ponce and head home for his second. Uruguay were up 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, Martin Caceres whipped in a brilliant cross that allowed Suarez to beat Ponce and Bravo yet again off an unstoppable header. Suarez was not content with a hat trick, however, and he scored his fourth six minutes after the third, giving Suarez goals with both feet and his head on the day. Uruguay substituted for Suarez, who left to thunderous applause before the audience at the Estadio Centenario. Uruguay win the match 4-0 and remain leaders in the South American qualifying group.
