Ecuador 2 - Peru 0

Ecuador welcomed southern neighbors Peru to their high altitude national stadium in Quito for each team's third FIFA World Cup qualifier. Ecuador defender Ericson Erazo suffered a knee ligament injury and had to be replaced with just under a quarter hour remaining in the first half. The first half featured open play, with the ball seemingly always in the final third and never in the midfield. Nevertheless, not a single troubling shot ever threatened an opposing goalkeeper in the scoreless first half.

Ecuador were the better team on the night, and it seemed only a matter of time before their superiority paid off. It took seventy minutes, but the first goal came off a great Edison Mendez finish off the inside of near post. With just a minute left in the match, Jaime Ayovi made a great cut and chip pass across the face of the open goal to Cristian Benitez, who tapped in for a well-deserved 2-0 home victory that places Ecuador in the top four in South American qualifying thus far.
