Chile 2 - Paraguay 0

Chile had a chance to dust themselves off after losing Uruguay with a game in Santiago against perennial contenders Paraguay. Chile are a much different team at home than on the road, and they proved that again tonight. Chile had lost their two road games so far in the tournament, but they had won emphatically in their sole prior home match. With return of Barcelona playmaker Alexis Sanchez rejuvenating the Chile offense, Chile found themselves a corner kick midway through the first period. Matias Fernandez sent the ball into the back post, where Pablo Contreras (pictured, red #6) rose above above two Paraguay defenders and knocked home a header for a 1-0 lead. The result of the play was a four-player dogpile (pictured). Chile lead 1-0 at the half.

Paraguay could never get their offense going, but as evidenced in their second-half stoppage time goal to salvage a 1-1 draw against Uruguay, Paraguay are capable of magic moments. Chile were unable to put the game to rest until there remained only five minutes to play. Substitute Matias Campos drove a ball into a sliding Paraguay defender off whom the ball took a crazy hop into the back of the net. Chile's 2-0 win jumps them ahead of Paraguay in the group table.
