Samoa 1 - American Samoa 0; Tonga 2 - Cook Islands 1

Tonga and Cook Islands faced off in the appetizer for Matchday Three of the OFC First Round in Apia. For the group finales, the skies opened up, bringing a heavy downpour that ceased just before kickoff for the first match, leaving the field inundated and creating different conditions with which the four teams were to contend. Tonga managed to take a lead before thirty minutes had expired, but a second goal was stopped at the goalmouth by the excess buildup of water. Cook Islands took advantage of their luck to score the equalizer eight minutes after Tonga's opener. Tonga looked to be the stronger team, but the half finished 1-1.

In the second period, Tonga continued to look for the attack. It took more than the allotted forty-five minutes, but Tonga broke through in the first minute of stoppage time for a well-deserved 2-1 lead after launching multiple shots on the Cook Islands goal throughout the half. Cook Islands then put the ball into the Tongan net in the third minute of stoppage time, but the play was called back for a foul. The final whistle blew, and Tonga ended their 2014 campaign with a 2-1 victory.

With the eyes of the world upon them, hosts Samoa and visitors American Samoa faced off in the final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup to take place in 2011. Samoa needed but a tie to continue on with their tournament; American Samoa needed a win. The teams had already logged 180 minutes over the previous four days, but only another 90 separated them from the OFC Second Round in June. From the opening kickoff, Samoa were in complete control of the match, dominating possession and putting American Samoa goalkeeper Nicky Salapu under constant siege. Salapu had to make various saves off free kicks, open play, and corner kicks, but the visitors held firm in the rain. American Samoa were forced to make a first-half injury substitution for Uasi Heleta, but they continued with their game plan of hitting long through balls in the hopes of latching onto one for a one-on-one opportunity. Salapu continued to rise to the challenges of Samoa's four-headed attack of Desmond Fa'aiuaso, Jared Curtis, Shaun Easthope, and Silao Malo, so American Samoa escaped to the locker room with the score even at zero. Malo was particularly dangerous as the half ended, but he was twice denied just before the halftime whistle.

In spite of their frustrating lack of a goal, Samoa were on pace to claim their spot in the next round even with a 0-0 result. Ten minutes in, American Samoa brought on an extra forward in place of a defender, but they could not shift the momentum. American Samoa utilized resolute defending to turn away nearly a dozen corner kick opportunities throughout the match. With thirteen minutes left in the match, Samoa had a one-on-one turned away by Salapu, the man of the match in search of the first clean sheet in American Samoa's history. Four minutes later against the run of player, American Samoa beat the goalkeeper but knock the ball of the post and not into the open net. The final ten minutes of play went American Samoa's way, but they were unable to find a goal, so they threw caution to the wind and sent everyone forward. Malo scored on the counterattack in the final minute to win the match 1-0 for Samoa, though he suffered an injury during the mad celebration. With the victory, Samoa are through to the OFC Second Round Group A, where they will join New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Tahiti. American Samoa finish with their first ever win and draw in FIFA competition, but they are eliminated from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

American Samoa 1 - Cook Islands 1; Samoa 1 - Tonga 1

Matchday Two of the OFC First Round in Apia turned out to be just as eventful as Matchday One. The teams played under a hot sun in the mid-afternoon, but the passion was what really heated up the pitch. The Cook Islands and a new head coach faced American Samoa in the Matchday Two opener. Shalom Luani (pictured, white) opened American Samoa's account midway through the first half with his second goal in as many games to give his team a 1-0 lead and himself a share of his country's all-time goal-scoring record. American Samoa dominated the rest of the half but were unable to convert further chances, so their 1-0 lead was the halftime score.

For the second straight match, American Samoa scored two goals. Unfortunately, the second of those ended up in the back of their own net off the boot of Tala Luvu, equalizing the scoreline at one-apiece with under half an hour left in the match. The tense conclusion to the match did not produce any additional goals, but Luvu was stretchered off the pitch late in regulation time, adding injury to insult for him. American Samoa grab their fourth point of the round after the 1-1 draw. Nevertheless, American Samoa will be ruing their missed chances as they really should have come away with the victory. The draw eliminates the Cook Islands from the 2014 FIFA World Cup as they no longer can finish first-place in the OFC First Round group.

Hosts Samoa faced off with Tonga in a match in which the home side were favored to win. Tonga knew that a win and only a win would keep them alive in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and they went for it. A few speculative shots were launched in the first period, but no real scoring opportunities were to be had until Samoa drew a foul in the penalty area, setting up Shaun Easthope to undue Samoa's penalty demons from two days prior by knocking the kick home for a 1-0 halftime lead.

In minute 68, Tonga fired the first of three warning shots with a goal off a corner kick that was ruled back for a foul on the goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Tonga smashed a shot clean off the post, leaving the hosts shaken but not beaten. The third blank was fired six minutes later with a miss on an open net. With nine minutes to go, Lokoua Taufahema came off the bench for Tonga. He would equalize the very next minute with his head, knotting the score at one. Tonga had a final chance in stoppage time to make their superiority count for the full three points but a one-on-one was turned away. Tonga failed to secure the win and are eliminated from the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Samoa take their fourth point of the tournament from this 1-1 tie.

The OFC First Round group will come down to the match between hosts Samoa and their neighbors American Samoa in a matchup of between the former Western Samoa and the former Eastern Samoa. Will West best the East? Both Samoa and American Samoa enter the final matchday with four points, and both teams are level at +1 on goal differential, the first tiebreaker. However, Samoa need only a draw to win the group due to the second tiebreaker of goals scored (Samoa lead 4-3), so American Samoa will have to be on the attack. The all-Samoan battle was originally scheduled as the early matchup on Matchday Three, but it is now the late matchup due to the importance of the game.

American Samoa 2 - Tonga 1; Samoa 3 - Cook Islands 2

OFC First Round Matchday One took place today in Apia, and it was not short on drama. The first matchup featured perenially underdogs American Samoa against a favored Tonga side, winners of all seven previous matchups between the two teams. American Samoa had lost its only twelve previous FIFA World Cup qualifiers, dating back to the 2002 tournament. American Samoa had also lost all five of its matches at the 2011 South Pacific Games in August and September. However, Tonga had only played two matches since the previous FIFA World Cup qualifying cycle and have the youngest head coach in men's international football. American Samoa centerback Johnny Saelua became the first ever transgender competitor in the FIFA World Cup when the whistle blew and she was in the starting lineup. In the opening half of the matchup, both teams were having trouble generating offense. American Samoa's Ramin Ott smashed a shot off the bar just past the thirty-minute mark. Nevertheless, with one minute left in the half, Ott, American Samoa's lone goalscorer from the 2010 tournament, scored their opener from long-range to give American Samoa their first ever lead in a FIFA World Cup match, 1-0 at the half. Ott is now their all-time leading goalscorer with two goals.

In the second half, American Samoa continued to push for history. They shot wide of the post in a bid to extend their lead. However, with little more than a quarter hour to go, Shalom Luani scored American Samoa's second goal of the match with a chip goal for an unexpected 2-0 lead. With three minutes left in the match, Tonga pulled one back off a header from a corner kick, but their desperate comeback attempt fell short as Saelua cleared a ball off the line in the final minute. American Samoa win 2-1 to record their victory ever points and victory in the FIFA World Cup. Luani becomes the first man to score a game-winning goal for American Samoa in a FIFA World Cup. Nicky Salapu, goalkeeper for American Samoa during their record-breaking 31-0 loss to Australia in 2001, found redemption tonight with a great save in the final couple minutes to preserve his team's victory.

In the second matchup, the host team for the OFC First Round Samoa opened their tournament against Cook Islands, considered by many to be their biggest challengers for the one spot available in the OFC Second Round. If the first match was historic, the second match was nothing but pure drama. Luki Gosche scored the opener for Samoa off a pass from Desmond Fa'aiuaso, who were up 1-0 after twenty minutes. Samoa then had a penalty kick saved. Cook Islands goalkeeper Iona Lupena saved a kick from Silao Malo. Cook Islands player Campbell Bell equalized with ten minutes left in the half after a loose ball was spilled by Samoa's goalkeeper, but Samoa immediately responded with a beautiful equalizer by Gosche, who feinted the goalie and slotted past him for the 2-1 lead that Samoa would take into the half.

In the second period, it was a battle of the bells. Samoa really should have put the match away but they hit the post twice, keeping Cook Islands alive in the match. Bell equalized for Cook Islands off a half-volley with five minutes to go, leaving the group delicately in the balance. A tie would likely mean that Cook Islands and Samoa would battle for the group crown via goal differential over their final two matches. However, Samoa had other plans, and in the second minute of stoppage time Albert Bell scored to give Samoa a 3-2 and a share of the group lead with two matchdays to go.

Both Samoa and American Samoa have three points, and their matchup on Matchday Three could prove to be decisive. Matchday Two on Thursday will open with American Samoa against Cook Islands and will close with Samoa facing Tonga.

Ethiopia 5 - Somalia 0

In the final match of the CAF First Round, Ethiopia hosted neighbors Somalia (pictured) in Addis Ababa. The two had played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg, so the pressure was on Ethiopia to win at home in order to advance to the CAF Second Round. The Ocean Stars of Somalia were in for a long night as the Walyas were on form today. An Ethiopia goal in the fifth minute assured us that at the very least there would be no extra time. Ethiopia took the 1-0 lead into the half, but all Somalia needed was a tie in order to advance due to the road-goals tiebreaker.

Shimeles Bekele wanted nothing to do with drama. Bekele scored twice in a four minute span just after the hour mark of the match, giving Ethiopia a 3-0 lead and ending Somalia hopes. A fourth goal came three minutes from time. The poor Somalia goalkeeper was clearly exhausted as the match was almost over, and he dropped a shot hit straight at him in stoppage time, spilling the rebound into the net for Ethiopia's fifth and final goal in the 5-0 rout. Ethiopia eliminate Somalia 5-0 on aggregate score and advance to participate in round two of African qualifying, starting June 2012. Ethiopia will be part of Group A with South Africa, Botswana, and Central African Republic.
