Uruguay 4 - Bolivia 2

Uruguay got to start off its qualifying campaign with the simplest assignment in CONMEBOL: Bolivia at home in Montevideo. An unexpected twist came in the form of a rainy day. However, Uruguay were not flustered by the rain nor the expectations of an easy victory, and an early corner kick ran from Diego Forlan was sent into the box, were the ball skidded, colliding with Diego Lugano, and fell to Luis Suarez (pictured, 9) who slotted home for the opener. Bolivia responded within fifteen minutes after a good through ball led to a goal that Rudy Cardozo chipped in off the far post over an oncoming Fernando Muslera slide. Uruguay regained the lead after a long free kick from Forlan was redirected by captain Lugano's head into the upper ninety for 2-1. Just ten minutes after their second, Uruguay struck again when Maxi Pereira sent a cross in from the right side of the field that landed on Edison Cavani's head, leading to a headed goal for a 3-1 halftime lead.

In the second half, Uruguay extended the lead to 4-1 off a miscue from Bolivia's goalkeeper after a Forlan free kick was muffed for a rebound. Lugano converted his second goal by pouncing on the rebound before teammate Diego Godin (pictured, 3) could tap in the rebound. Bolivia scored on a late penalty to round out the scoring in Uruguay's 4-2 victory. Uruguay next travel to Paraguay on Tuesday while Bolivia go home to face Colombia that same day.
