Colombia 2 - Bolivia 1

Bolivia made use of the highest-altitude stadium in the region, the imposing Hernando Siles in La Paz. The visiting side were Colombia, but the visitors got the better of play during the first half. Colombia, as usual, displayed the finishing disease that has afflicted them for years, and chance after chance went begging in the first half, leaving the game knotted at zero goals apiece.

In the second half, Colombia broke a counterattack two minutes in that resulted in a chipped goal around the onrushing goalkeeper. From that point on, Bolivia were clearly the better team. Six minutes from full time, Walter Flores received a pass and smashed a bomb off the underside of the crossbar for the equalizer. An overconfident Bolivia began sending too many men forward, desperate for the full three points at home. In the final minute of stoppage time, Colombia broke a counterattack on the overextended Bolivians, leading to an easy two-on-one fast break and finish for the 2-1 Cafeteros victory. Colombia become the first team to win on the road in CONMEBOL qualifying.
