Bolivia are a team that desperately need points at home to remain afloat in the chase 2014 FIFA World Cup. Bolivia have two home matches in the space of eight days, so they needed to make their move off the bottom of the table. However, Chile proved rude guests to the Estadio Hernando Siles in Buenos Aires. The first half was quite even, but in stoppage time Chile were able to spring an attack. The Bolivian defense was unable to poke the ball away from Humberto Suazo, who slotted a ball beyond his defender and between two others for Charles Aranguiz, who finished for a late goal that led to a 1-0 lead at the half.
Just as Bolivia were starting to mount a strong surge to begin the second half, their momentum was taken away as Luis Gutierrez was ejected from the game in minute 54 for an airborne tackle to stop a Chilean break. Bolivia, even down a man, stayed on the offensive for a solid fifteen minutes immediately following the dismissal. However, Chile played a controlled counterattack seven minutes from time. A run down the right side of the pitch led to a shot which struck the far post. Arturo Vidal (pictured, red) gathered the rebound a smacked a shot into the roof of the net to seal the match with an exclamation point. Chile held on for the clean sheet and a 2-0 win to move to second place in the South American table.
