Honduras were hoping their home match against Costa Rica in San Pedro Sula would provide them with three points. Honduras were effective at getting into the attacking third during the first half but not so effective at creating good shots at goal. In fact, an Alvaro Saborio header from a Tico corner was the best chance of the first half. No goals were scored in a 0-0 first half.
Honduras remained the better team coming out of their locker rooms. It took until twenty minutes had gone by, but finally they had their breakthrough. A soft through ball from Roger Espinoza found Jerry Bengston (pictured, white #11) open in space in the Costa Rican box. Bengston coolly slotted to the far corner for the opening goal. Costa Rica were forced to finally search for some offense, but truthfully they did not seem very motivated to perform this afternoon. Honduras win 1-0 and clinch at worst a spot in the intercontinental playoffs.
