Ecuador 1 - Uruguay 0

Ecuador were at home in Quito to take on Uruguay.  Ecuador had six wins and one draw at home so far in qualifying, so Uruguay were looking to pull off a shock in the chase for the final direct qualifying berth out of South America.  The teams began the day level on points.  Antonio Valencia (pictured, yellow) sprinted up the right side of the pitch for Ecuador.  Valencia played a perfect ball across the box that beat a sliding block attempt from Maxi Pereira.  Jefferson Montero was there for the tap-in to put Ecuador up a goal at the half hour mark.  Luis Suarez hit a dipping free kick for Uruguay, put Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez made an awkward push-aside of the ball.

In the second period, Uruguay should have gone down a man due to a stomp tackle by Egidio Arevalo Rios, but the referee produced only a yellow card.  Substitute Joao Rojas created the second goal for Ecuador.  He laid a ball behind to a teammate and then ran into the box.  A rebound was spilled, so Rojas picked the ball up and dribbled to the side of the goalkeeper before roofing the shot.  However, the refereeing crew was drunk and decided to flag Rojas for offside despite him being more than two meters onside at the time of the original shot.  In spite of the poor officiating, Ecuador win 1-0 and all but clinch a spot at Brasil 2014.  With this result, Ecuador need only a draw to qualify for Brasil 2014.  Uruguay need to defeat Argentina at home on Tuesday and hope for somebody to win the Chile-Ecuador match all while overcoming a goal differential deficit.
