Ecuador 1 - Uruguay 1

Montevideo welcomed Copa America 2011 champions Uruguay home to take on Ecuador.  The hosts, after a horror performance in Colombia last Friday, continued to be second best on this night.  Ecuador jumped on La Celeste early.  Uruguay centerback and captain Diego Lugano took down Felipe Caicedo in the box.  Caicedo dusted himself off and converted from the penalty spot himself to give the visitors a 1-0 lead inside of ten minutes played.  The visitors remained in the ascendancy for the majority of the half.  Uruguay started to pull themselves together just after the half hour mark.  Luis Suarez nearly equalized with an off-balance chip shot with three minutes remaining, but the ball only fell in time to hit the top of the crossbar.

At the hour mark, Ecuador had shouts for a penalty when Cristian Benitez was clipped in the Uruguayan penalty area, but the referee instead booked Benitez for simulation.  Uruguay were saved when a block clearance fell to Edinson Cavani in the penalty area, from where he hit a shot goalward too quickly for the goalkeeper to even react.  In stoppage time, a second yellow card to Ecuador's Antonio Valencia saw him leave the pitch for the final few seconds.  The match ends as a 1-1 draw.
