Colombia 3 - Chile 1

Santiago was the site as the rested Chile team coming off an open date was hosting surging Colombia.  The match was back and forth in the early going with Chile looking the more dangerous side, but in minute 34 the whole outlook of the afternoon changed when Gary Medel was sent off for the hosts for a straight red card after slapping an opponent in the face.  His utter stupidity seemed not to matter immediately after his moment of madness, for seven minutes later Chile found their opener.  Matias Fernandez gathered a loose ball twenty-three yards from goal and then fired through a mess of yellow jerseys to put his shot on frame and past the goalkeeper.  Chile would head into the break up a goal but down a man.

Colombia frustratingly could not break through the acrobatics of Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.  It took a left-footed James Rodriguez free kick off the inside of the near post to knot the score at one apiece.  South America is the current cradle of left-footed free-kick geniuses, with goals scored this past week by Argentina's Lionel Messi and Venezuela's Juan Arango with lefty strikes as well.  Colombia, against a tiring Chile, finally made the extra man pay off.  Aldo Ramirez was substituted onto the pitch and paid immediate dividends when he slotted a through ball between the centerbacks onto which Radamel Falcao latched to create a one-on-one with Bravo.  Falcao won the battle, and Colombia had a 2-1 lead to go with their man advantage.  Four minutes later, Colombia had a three-on-three situation, and Falcao picked out Teofilo Gutierrez to this left, leading to a finish around Bravo for Los Cafeteros' third goal.  Colombia lost their extra man when Abel Aguilar gathered his second yellow card in minute 83. Colombia coasted to the finish line and win 3-1 on the road.
