Peru 1 - Argentina 1

Lima was the site of Peru's second home qualifier in five days.  This time the poor visiting souls were Argentina.  Peru out-muscled Argentina all night, and  they kept someone in the breathing space of star Lionel Messi (pictured, blue #10) so that he never found a rhythm.  Peru drew a penalty when Angel Di Maria took down Jefferson Farfan in the box.  Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved the twelfth minute penalty kick from Claudio Pizarro.  Peruvian Rinaldo Cruzado smacked a long through ball from midfield into the path of Luis Advincula, who composed himself at the end line before slotted across the box to Carlos Zambrano, who finished after beating two Albiceleste players to the ball.  Peru finally had their 1-0 lead, but it would last only a quarter hour.  The goal was very similar, with Federico Fernandez smacking a long ball to Ezequiel Lavezzil, who slotted across the box to Gonzalo Higuain, who then beat one defender to the ball before equalizing.  The half ended 1-1 with Peru feeling as though they deserved better.

Peru remained the superior side in the second half, and Argentina were merely fighting to hold onto a point.  Pizarro headed just wide of goal on one occasion.  Peru came closest to the winner in stoppage time, but Romero was there to turn away a Zambrano chance and deny the home side the win they deserved.  The match ends in a 1-1 draw, so Argentina go top of the table.
