Uruguay 2 - Colombia 0

The home cooking of Montevideo was just what the doctor ordered for Uruguay as they looked to pull into a tie for fourth place with Ecuador.  Colombia were the visitors on this day.  Colombia and Uruguay were trading blows in the first half.  Perhaps the biggest blow was a Luis Suarez (pictured, blue #9) free kick that had to be punched aside at the post by Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina.  The half ended scoreless.

A Walter Gargano through ball put Edinson Cavani in with a chance on goal for Uruguay, but his shot rocked the crossbar under pressure from Luis Perea (pictured, yellow #14).  However, La Celeste were not to be denied, and their insistence and persistence paid off.  A straight-on cross from Maxi Pereira was headed into the goal by Cavani with less than a quarter hour to play.  It was 2-0 but three minutes later.  From a throw-in, Gaston Ramirez chested a ball down and turned with Stefan Medina on his back before he slotted across the box for a Cristian Stuani finish.  It was an odd decision to give right back Medina his first cap in such an important game, and his lack of experience cost Colombia quite often in this match.  Uruguay win 2-0 and go joint fourth with Ecuador in the CONMEBOL table.  With this result, Paraguay have been eliminated from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.  A point in either of their final two matches will assure Uruguay of at least a spot in the intercontinental playoffs.
