Argentina 3 - Peru 1

Peru were visiting Buenos Aires in order to face hosts Argentina in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.  Surprisingly, it would be the already-eliminated Peruvian side that would score first.  A booming through ball from his own half by Gianmarco Gambetta put Claudio Pizarro in ahead of the Argentine backline.  Pizarro was forced to chip from outside the box by the onrushing goalkeeper, but he did so superbly to score the first goal.  Two minutes later, Argentina hit back on a corner.  Peru goalkeeper Raul Fernandez was able to push away the initial header on frame by Federico Fernandez, but the rebound was easily cleaned up by Ezequiel Lavezzi (pictured, blue) for the equalizer.  A turnover at midfield by Peru gave Angel di Maria a chance to lead the break for the home side.  Di Maria pushed ahead for Rodrigo Palacio, who took the ball to the end line.  Running out of space, Palacio spun and rolled a pass back into the box.  Lavezzi was there to push home for a 2-1 lead.  The halftime score was Argentina 2, Peru 1.

Two minutes after the restart, a Marcos Rojo cross was knocked into the goal by a sliding Palacio ahead of the block attempt by Gambetta.  Argentina led 3-1 and were able to safely coast to the finish line.  Argentina win 3-1 to clinch first place in CONMEBOL.
